Arsenal are set to win the race to sign 2014 World Cup winner Sami Khedira, according to reports from Spain.
Spanish newspaper Marca claim Arsenal
and Real Madrid have reached a deal to bring the German star to the Emirates Stadium for €29 million (£23m).
They go as far as saying Khedira will sign a four-year contract in London, to be signed in the ‘coming hours’, worth €10m a year.
Sami Khedira had previously refused to sign a new two-year contract at the 2014 UEFA Champions League winners, with his current deal set to expire next summer.
The German international did not feel he was used to the best of his ability by being asked by both managers José Mourinho and Carlo Ancelotti over his time at Real Madrid. They have asked him to play a sole defensive role whereas Germany head coach Joachim Löw has got the best out of him this summer at the World Cup by allowing the midfielder to venture forward.
Khedira scored Germany’s fifth goal after 29 minutes in their 7-1 humiliation of Brazil in the World Cup semi-final last week. He missed the final yesterday due to a calf injury picked up in the warmup.
Should the 2014 UEFA Champions League and World Cup winner join Arsenal, he will link up with fellow teammates at the World Cup, Mesut Özil, Per Mertesacker and Lukas Podolski.
Arsenal also have fellow countryman Serge Gnabry on their books.
