Finland claimed their first gold medal at the 2014 Sochi Games as the
pair of Iivo Niskanen and Sami Jauhojaervi won the men’s cross-country team sprint while Norway won the women’s event.

Niskanen and Jauhojaervi finished the six laps in a time
of 23:14.89, 0.97s ahead of Russia with Sweden
picking up the bronze medal at the Laura Cross-country
Ski & Biathlon Centre.
The Fins were among the top four for the first three
rounds and made their move in the fourth leg as they
pushed into second place before making their final
move on lap six.
In the women’s category, favourites Norway were far
too strong as Marit Bjoergen and Ingvild Oestberg
dominated from start to finish to take gold with Finland
finishing second and Sweden third.
Finland had the early lead, but Bjoergen and Oestberg
started to take charge from the second round and never
relinquished the lead as they crossed the line in
16:04.05 with their Scandinavian neighbours Finland
another nine seconds off their pace.
Germany were looking good for the bronze, but Sweden
put in a brilliant final lap to complete the podium.
